- Episode 6 is finally here! This episode features Codename: Rocky, The Best of the Worst, Target for Tomorrow and the Horns of Destruction, The Pinstripes and Beat the Red Light. Check it out here and some info on the bands here.
This podcast is much different than the previous episodes, much so because it's Ska music. It's not dead, it's very much alive. A majority of these bands have been around for a while, but I just learned about them this year. Codename:Rocky is no longer active (and for a while now), but the members do have new projects going on, one of which played their first show just recently. I actually saw Codename: Rocky for the first (and last) time here in Las Vegas at Ska Summit in 2003. They definitely put on one of the more memorable sets of that day. Reel Big Fish put on a cool set, but what was more cool about it was the fact that Monique Powell went on stage and sang her part on "She Has a Girlfriend Now."
The Best of the Worst and Beat the Red Light like to keep it heavy and fast with their own special approach to Ska. Target for Tomorrow has definitely got one of the more tighter rhythm sections and the Pinstripes are groovin' with their style of 2-tone. Enjoy this episode and the bands on it, they're all definitely worth checking out. More to come soon.
- Korova's, Demonstration #7089, is now available. Check it out here.
- Journal has a show coming up this Saturday. Check them out if you're in the area. Also, check out their bandcamp for music.

- Episode seven of the Taking the Lead Podcast is now up for streaming! Please check it out here. Featured on this episode are Pennylane, OneStarCity, The Art of Abandonment, Sprockets, and Sound the Sky.
Today's episode has a bit more rock vibe and pop sensibility to it, but definitely progressive on some levels. I stumbled upon Pennylane by accident when I was checking out bands in Portland, Oregon. Originally from Kauai, Hawaii, I was happy to hear Pennylane included members from Hawaii locals, Yellow Snow, Prom King, Longshot and Push the Pedal. Unfortunately I never got to see them live, but I'm glad to hear that they have new projects going on. I heard about OneStarCity after learning what the members of District 7 were doing when that band had finished, but OneStarCity is also no longer active. I saw The Art of Abandonment and Sprockets when I lived in La Grande, OR. Both their sets were great and I was happy to meet members from both groups. Since then though, Sprockets have matured musically and have developed a more definite sound for themselves. Sound the Sky too has an original approach to their own form of progressive rock. It's a sound worth checking out. Please enjoy this episode.

Episode eight is here! Featured on this episode are The Quintessentials, Social Concern, Raised By Apes, Crookedhook, and Mayflower. Please take a listen here. Some info and links on these bands here.
I haven't thought of making any Halloween-themed episodes for this month, but still, I feel that these fives songs would fit nicely for a short horror film. A really cool one. With zombies. Lots of them. Opening the film would be the Quintessentials. I first heard about this band when I learned that Les Hernandez was in it. He was the same singer and guitar player for previous Hawaii local bands, Crawling Chaos, The Catalogs and the Products. I picked up Crawling Chaos' tape, Hail the Dark One, at a local record shop and freaked out later when I figured out who the Dark One was in reference to. I gave the tape to a friend to get rid of it only to later buy another copy of the tape because it was just too good to give up. The tunes were too catchy, my favorites being, “The Life for Me,” and “Color My Rainbow Black.” It worked out in my favor too because about seven years later, a contest was put on by Hawaiian Express in which participants had to simply submit their favorite Quintessentials song (I think that was it...). I submitted “The Life for Me,” which happened to also appear on the Quint's first album, The Horror Never Ends...(2001). I won a copy of their new album, Legends from the Grave (2005), and a pair of tickets to Rufio's first show in Hawaii. The Catalogs wrote tunes that were equally good. So good, in fact, that the Queers covered the opening track to Viva Los Muertos, Another Girl, which appeared on Don't Back Down. Social Concern is a band I came across through myspace. All ready three albums into their career, Social Concern have certainly progressed since their formation in 2003. You can definitely hear it from album to album, especially on their newest release, Cut and Dry (2010). But I decided to play something from their second album, Exodus, since it was the first one I picked up. I saw Raised by Apes at a show earlier this year here in Las Vegas, with Eken is Dead, The Resistors, and I believe, Shitfaced Tattoos. They didn't slow down one bit during their entire set. I came across Crookedhook on a website after watching a video for their song, Breathe Pollution. The video opens with an ocean surface and various shots of natural scenery slowly headed to disaster. Zombies later emerge right before being disposed of. It's a pretty awesome video. Mayflower, from New York, just released their debut full-length almost a year later after recording it and I'm happy to be able to play a track off of that. Roll Credits. Much thanks to the bands. Enjoy the music on this episode. Thanks for listening.

Happy Halloween! Episode nine is finally here! Please check it out here.
It was in 1998 I went to the third annual Skalabration held at the Amphitheater near the UH campus in Hawaii. Opening this show was Go Jimmy Go, a local ska band, only they didn't play your typical third-wave ska at the time. These tunes were a bit more groovy and reggae influenced. Go Jimmy Go knew how to keep the crowd moving and they still do today with their rock steady jams. They were a great opening band that definitely set the pace for the rest of the show. Following up were Hepcat, Dance Hall Crashers and Save Ferris. About five years later I picked up Soul Arrival at Ska Summit in Las Vegas.
I came across Big D and the Kids Table after listening to their rendition of Once in a While off of the Rocky Horror Punk Show. It's definitely one of my favorite tracks of the band because even though the song spans seven minutes, at no point of the song does it drag or become boring. I later picked up How it Goes and heard their ability to compose much more diverse and aggressive material. When Strictly Rude came out in 2007, it instantly became my favorite release of that year. It held a lot of that rude flavor (strictly rude, duh), but the fact that most of the songs are about music, more music and PBR, it can't get any better than that. Fluent in Stroll did take a leap in another direction, but it again showcases how versatile these musicians are. It's an instant favorite.
The Rudeness come from Rhode Island, the last place I thought of having a reggae band. But this band has definitely got some wicked tunes that carry smooth vibes and great harmonies. The Sidewalks and La Muneca Y Los Muertos play more rock based ska, but equally catchy and sweet. Please enjoy the tunes. Much thanks to the bands.More info on the bands here.

Episode 10 is here! Please check it out here or here. Some info and links are available here. Ten episodes into this podcast and it's going great so far. I'd like to say thanks to all the bands that have allowed me to share their music through these podcasts. It means a lot to be able to share the music, so thank you. Featured on this episode is Las Vegas locals, Peccadilloes. I haven't been able to see this band play yet, but hopefully soon. They recorded the title track for a local independent film which was recently made and I believe just recently released on DVD. The film is called, One Long Day, and the song the Peccadilloes recorded can be heard on the website. The movie looks pretty cool too.
I decided to replay some music by bands who appeared on previous episodes. Mistermeaner and Generic are two favorite Hawaii bands for me and they seem to flow well with the other bands on here as well. I'm sure those guys played tons of shows together, but the only one I've seen them play at together was the Pennywise show I attended back in 2003. Mistermeaner opened, Generic played second and Pennywise closed. It was a fantastic show.
I wasn't able to see Up the Fury play, but have been listening to them on and off for the last few years or so. Their music has always interested me because of its aggressiveness, and its just pretty damn good. I stumbled upon the Revision Plan through some sites and was fortunate enough to pick up their EP and a copy of the compilation they were a part of, which is featured on this current episode.
Thanks to all the bands. Please enjoy the music and thanks for listening.

- Episode 11 is up for your listening pleasure! Please check it out here and other info here.
This episode features a diverse line-up of bands. Opening the podcast is a band from Vancouver, British Columbia, called Ninjaspy. This band's music has more than a few different elements in it. They have a subtle way of mixing ska and reggae influences in their progressive hardcore/hard-rock sound. Ninjaspy has only a few shows left for the year and two of them are this weekend. It will be happening in Canada. Details can be seen here. The second band on this episode is Eken is Dead, a band I saw in Las Vegas earlier this year along with Raised by Apes, The Resistors and Shitfaced Tattoos. Eken is Dead played last and it was a pretty killer set that extended well into the night with a few covers of Rage Against the Machine. They even did a song by Rise Against. Eken is Dead too has their final shows for the year posted on their myspace. Appearing third on this episode is Prize Country. I was fortunate enough to see Prize Country this year in Las Vegas and pick up a few records from them, even though I lived in Vancouver, WA for two years and not attending a single show of theirs in their hometown of Portland, OR. They appeared on the very first episode of this podcast and am glad to be able to share their music once more. Prize Country is no longer active, but I'm sure new projects will be coming out in the future. Another band local in the area of Las Vegas once existed by the name of Entity Awaken. It was a metal band originally from the island of Maui, Hawaii. Its members went on to pursue other things in life, while two went on to San Diego to pursue music. One of the members went on to play in Abandon the Raft, but is currently no longer with them. Abandon the Raft is the fourth band on this episode. Aside from their first album, Concept Paradox, Abandon the Raft recently released a new EP titled, House of Gold and is available for free download on its Facebook. Closing this episode is Pacifica, a band originally from Honolulu, HI, but made the big move to Orange County, California. I seen these guys a while back when they opened up for Rufio and Over It in Hawaii. The music is very progressive and has matured through the years since their early beginnings. Definitely good stuff. The Process of Illumination is also available for free on the band's website.
This will be the last episode until next month. I have two special episodes in the works. One will reflect the new releases that have been on the episodes so far and another showcasing my favorite new releases of the year. A Top 25 of 2010 type of show. Well, that's exactly what it's going to be. But until then, please enjoy Episode 11. Check out the band's shows if they're in your area. Support local and independent music. Have a Happy Thanksgiving! Much thanks to the bands. Thanks for listening.

- The Top 25 of 2010 is up (finally)! Check out the list here. Listen to the two-part episode here.
It's a bit later than I hoped to release this thing, but better late than never, right? And it wouldn't be a top 25 of 2010 in 2011 (considering it's two days away)...and of course, other factors were involved in this delay. The holidays were a pretty busy time this year and battling a cold and other stuff, but any who, enough complaining. I do hope you enjoy this special episode. It took me a whiles to put together and it is by far the longest episode I've released.
The idea behind this episode has stuck with me for the last 5 years. Since 2005, I've always put together a list of 25 favorite releases on paper, but never really shared them with anyone (not until now!). Maybe it was because they were an odd list of albums, or I didn't want to get bashed on for my musical tastes. Or maybe I had nothing else to say about an album other than, "I like listening to their music." I wish it were that simple. Sure, a lot of amazing albums came out this year that I wish had made the list and a lot I didn't get a chance to listen to, but yeah, 25 spots is all ready a bit excessive (5's too little, 10's not enough, I5's an odd number and if I'm gonna do 20, then I might as well make it 25. Plus a buddy of mine started this and he said 25). And of course, I bent the rules a bit to include ep's and singles. Those formats are just as important as albums.
Please enjoy this episode for what it is, my own personal favorite releases of 2010. This year was certainly a good one and 2011 should be equally good if not better. Thank you to all the bands for the music, the listeners for your comments and labels for your support. See you in 2011 (Two days away!). Thanks for listening.
